LABORATORY
Burette:
For accurately dispensing liquids. Commonly used when carrying out tests for
acids or bases - titrations.
Beaker:
Used for rough estimates of volume but more commonly for mixing or dissolving
chemicals.
Conical
flask: Used in growing bacteria; chemical reactions where gases may be collected;
mixing acids and bases when doing titrations.
Crucible:
Used to calculate the dry weight of samples. Also used to form crystals that
contain no water, such as anhydrous copper sulphate.
Buchner
funnel: Attached to a vacuum pump for rapid filtering of fine sediments or suspended
solutions.
Evapourating
dish: For forming crystals from various salt solutions. Copper sulphate solution
is commonly evapourated in such dishes when forming "seed" crystals.
Bunsen
burner: Used for heating beakers, testtubes or distillation equipment and for
burning samples such as magnesium metal.
Measuring
cylinder: Used to meaure volumes of liquids. Read the volume from where the
bottom of the meniscus touches a numbered division.
Gauze: Placed
over busen flame for even heating of beakers, etc. Usually placed on a tripod.
Volumetric
flask : Used to measure volumes accurately when diluting samples.
